Top Trail Hire & Tours

Top Trail Hire & Tours was set up by Ray and Robyn Clarke in 2012 to promote the use of the great new Twin Coast Cycle trail when it first opened in Northland.

Owners, Dave & Anita Woodfield moved to Northland in 2016 and have made Russell/Kororareka their home after a lifetime of family holidays and other visits to the area.

Following some extended overseas travel in 2022 & 2023 where they used e-bikes extensively, Dave & Anita discovered the joy of touring on two wheels.  After returning to NZ, Dave joined Northland Experiences as a guide, combining his passion for history with a love of cycling.  Dave & Anita acquired the business from Mike & Lynn Simm, the founders, in November 2024.

While Dave is immersed in all things cycling and e-bikes, Anita enjoys her role as CFO at Waitangi Treaty Grounds.  They also own a small tourist accommodation business in Russell, Kokomo Retreat.

Dave & Anita love working in the tourism industry and are passionate about sharing the beauty of Northland with other kiwis and international visitors alike.  We hope to welcome you on one of our tours soon!

At Top Trail our aim is to make it easy for you to enjoy the trail and Northland. We offer both cycle hire and transport, tours, customised itineraries and activities to help you and your friends ride all of the sections of the trail or just a section of your choice.

Quentin – Bike mechanic our go-to man – Que is normally the smile that will great you at our HQ in Kaikohe – he will sort your bikes out and get you off on the trail, he may also double up as a shuttle driver! 

Our Admin and bookings team – Shelley is our team leader and manages the majority of the bookings –  depending on days – Brita, Steph & Anika happy to answer your queries as well!

"Great experience with the Top Trail team. We used them twice to shuttle me from each end of the trail back to Kaikohe and the whole experience was so easy. Super easy booking system, very friendly and super helpful staff at base and our drivers Keith and Ken were waiting when we got to the end. Not only were they incredibly helpful and friendly, but they were also extremely knowledgeable about the area and gave me little mini guided tours on the way back. Great experience all round. 5 Stars! All the staff were really awesome and accommodating - from making the booking, getting set up and the shuttle home. They all made sure you had a great ride. Tipene especially made sure our bikes were well set for a comfortable, fun ride. The trail from kaikohe to Horeke was awesome - a tunnel, forest trails and you finish with a beautiful boardwalk. I would highly recommend doing the Twin Coast trail and using Top Trail for your ride.

5 stars! Great service on a fun trail Top Trail was easy to book and service was great on the day. Quinton was very helpful and friendly, advising us on a route. Bikes were good quality and well maintained. Pick up was arranged at a time to suit everyone on the trail that day. Would recommend!

Riding into my 60s in the best possible way! For my 60th birthday, I wanted to do something we could all enjoy as a family. I was a wee bit worried my six year old granddaughter may not have been able to manage the 14 km Trail and Tunnel Taster - she's only just become a confident rider - but she absolutely nailed it. Quentin was so helpful setting us up with the right bikes for each member of the family and the trail itself is gorgeous. The sense of accomplishment the 6 and 7 year old felt on completing the ride was everything! Such a fun way to begin a very special year! The shuttle ride back was most welcome and the crew at Top Trail are top humans. Knowledgeable, caring, supportive - we're already planning the next trip.

5 Stars! Fabulous Family Adventure We did the 3 night cycling tour in Northland as a family of four (sons 13 and 11). Shelley, Quinton, Kevin and Ken and the whole team at Top Trails did a great job. The bikes were great, things were perfectly organised and we had a lovely time seeing more of this beautiful country. The accomodation was great. The landscapes and scenery varied, there were ferries and a historical train trip, a nature hike and lots of places of interest along the way. The time flew by and we are already looking at other cycling trips to do.

We really enjoyed our recent 2 day bike with your team. In our 70's and our first use of E bikes. They were great, well provided by Tipene and shuttles waiting for us as arranged. The journey was varied taking us into the lesser populated west coast plus the vintage train on the east coast. Highly recommended.

We rode over two days, and on the first day from Kaikohe to Mangungu Mission. Tipene helped us with our bikes (plus a treasure trove of cultural and historical info we Aussies didn't know, thanks Tipene!) and gave us directions to get started. Our ebikes operated flawlessly and the ride was through picturesque, varied and interesting scenery. We stopped in Okaihau at Kiwi Kai for lunch (their pies are highly recommended!) The track was very well maintained and signposted. On the second day we rode Kaikohe to Kawakawa. This was enjoyable and fascinating, though less scenic than the previous day. We joined the vintage railway at Kawakawa which was a treat in itself. The shuttle service back to the depot on both days was on time & informative. Overall it was a memorable two days of riding which we hope to repeat one day.
